AI search visibility in 2026: what businesses can actually control.
The labels AEO and GEO are new. The durable work underneath them is familiar: publish useful information, make it technically accessible, support claims with evidence, keep business facts consistent, and measure what search systems actually surface.
1. AI search does not eliminate technical SEO.
Search and answer systems still need to reach the page, understand its topic, and connect it to the rest of the site. Canonicals, sitemaps, descriptive titles and headings, internal links, accessible markup, indexability and page quality remain foundational. Google says structured data can help it understand page content, while its broader guidance continues to emphasize useful, accurate, people-first content.
2. OpenAI Search has a specific crawler.
OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot as the crawler used for ChatGPT search discovery. OpenAI also separates search crawling from GPTBot, which is used for potential model-training data. A site can allow OAI-SearchBot while disallowing GPTBot.
3. Bing now exposes AI citation data.
Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report shows pages cited in AI-generated answers, citation trends, and grounding-query groups across supported Microsoft AI experiences. That makes AI visibility more measurable than broad claims about “GEO scores.”
4. Evidence matters more when content is reused in answers.
Bing recommends supporting claims with evidence and improving clarity and structure. Google similarly emphasizes accuracy, quality and relevance, including manual review of AI-generated content and metadata. For a business site, that means dated source-backed claims, clear authorship, transparent service descriptions, real prices where appropriate, and no invented case studies.
5. Measure business outcomes, not only citations.
AI citations are useful leading indicators, but the business outcome is usually a qualified visit, inquiry, booking, sale, or better customer understanding. A measurement plan should combine conventional search data, AI citation data where available, referral traffic, and CRM attribution.
What to do when you do not yet have AI-search case studies
- State the limitation rather than manufacturing proof.
- Establish a baseline before changing the site.
- Record the exact technical and content changes made.
- Track the same metrics after implementation.
- Separate crawl/index improvements from citation changes and business outcomes.
- Publish client results only after they are verified and permission is granted.
